Dreaming Tree Butterfly Pop Up Card

I needed a special card for a special birthday, and this Dreaming Tree Butterfly Pop Up Card was perfect for the occasion. It’s impressive, but surprisingly easy.

Supplies I used:

I inked several of the pieces after cutting them out, and of course, that step took the longest. The card would be fine without inking, but it’s a nice touch if you have the time.

I used clear gel glue for these pieces so I could adjust them slightly if needed. There are small cut marks in the card base that help with lining up the pieces.

I really like this purple cardstock, but it is double-sided and not solid core. Because of this, some white showed where the score marks are. I used some purple ink on them to make them less obvious.

The butterfly has two vellum pieces that go on the back. Gluing vellum can be tricky, and I didn’t want to take a chance messing it up with liquid glue, and so I used mini glue dots. I cut a few of the glue dots in half for some key places that were too narrow for a full glue dot. I keep an old pair of scissors handy for cutting sticky things so I don’t get a good pair gummed up with adhesive.

I used my brayer to press the vellum down onto the glue dots.

The next step was to put the tabs of the butterfly through the slits in the card and glue them down with more glue dots.

Then I turned my attention to the outside of the card. The large purple pieces cover up the tabs and marks on the card base.

I used white glitter cardstock for the flower and inked the edges with purple ink. I curled the petals slightly using the barrel of a pencil.

I don’t usually make envelopes, but this one was very easy, and I wanted the card to be extra special.

Leo’s assembly videos are really helpful, and I recommend following along with him as you assemble Dreaming Tree projects. The video for this project is here. This card was really fun to make and would be great for a birthday or Mother’s Day.
